Seasonal Fruit : Where to Pick ‘Em

This is but a sampling of Southland locations where you can pick your own fruits and vegetables.

Rick Brecunier has a 25-acre ranch to which most people come for the olallieberries, green beans, yellow wax beans, purple beans, squash, Royal apricots and cucumbers.

The peach season kicks off this weekend at Yingst Ranch, with Red Tops. It will run all summer long with Babcocks appearing around July 21. Charlie and Nancy Yingst also grow pears, which will come in around the beginning of August, and apples, which will be in a little later.

Kenny and Toyoko Zink’s early peaches, which will begin to be harvested this week, are Red Heavens. They also have Tilton apricots. Later in the summer they’ll have Bartlett pears.

The City of Los Angeles Parks and Recreation Department has a one-weekend picking of Valencia oranges and White Marsh grapefruit July 9 and 10 at city-owned Orcutt Ranch in West Hills. Picking runs 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and the fruit costs $2 a shopping bag--bring your own bag.

At Bill O’Leary’s ranch in Wheeler Canyon, you can pick Royal apricots from trees planted by his father in 1903. They should be in within the next two weeks.

At Friend’s Ranch fruit stand, they sell Valencia oranges and some navels, avocados, grapefruit, tomatoes and squash.

Dorothy Holmes runs a small farm stand near Wheeler Hot Springs in Ojai, selling unsprayed peaches by the lug. The Venturas will be in in a week, then Elbertas and Bonitas. Call first.

This 7-year-old farm stand, located just off Santa Monica Road in Carpinteria, has olallieberries, boysenberries and raspberries.
