A baby kidnaped from his mother at a Downtown welfare office last week was found unharmed Friday, and his alleged abductor, a 14-year-old girl, was arrested, police said.

The girl allegedly claimed that the child was hers. She told her boyfriend’s sister-in-law that her boyfriend was the father, said Los Angeles police spokeswoman Sandra Castello.

The sister-in-law said the girl asked her to care for the infant about a week ago. Gomez became suspicious of the teen-ager’s story and called detectives Friday, Castello said.

The baby, 6-week-old Hector Orozco, was taken to California Medical Center to be examined and reunited with his parents. The suspect, whose name was withheld, was booked on suspicion of kidnaping. She allegedly took the child from his mother June 22.

The boy’s mother was standing in line at the welfare office on South Grand Avenuewith her son when she felt faint. A young woman approached her and asked if she could hold the baby, and within seconds she and Hector were gone.
