Ventura police on Friday afternoon arrested a 19-year-old Ventura man suspected in the killing of a Santa Paula man more than a year ago.

The suspect’s name has not been released, police said, because he was a juvenile at the time of the slaying.

The body of Alfonso “Sammy” Garza Sanchez, 24, was found in the 200 block of an alley between Vince and Flint streets just before midnight Jan. 27, 1993. Sanchez, a meat cutter at a Ventura supermarket, died from multiple gunshot wounds.

A warrant had been issued for the suspect’s arrest, but Ventura police did not specify how long they had been looking for him.

Two officers spotted the suspect while they were patrolling near the new Montalvo storefront station. He was taken into custody without incident and is being held at Ventura County Jail without bail.

He is also being held on a misdemeanor warrant for failing to appear in an unrelated case in which he is charged with being under the influence of a controlled substance.
