A 21-year-old Mission Viejo man spending the summer in New York has been shot during an apparent robbery attempt, according to New York police.

Matthew Charles Blek, 21, a graduate of Trabuco Hills High School, was walking a girlfriend home early Wednesday in Queens when two robbers accosted them, New York police said.

Blek, a student at Cal State Fresno, was shot in the chest and eye and died later. His companion was not injured.

Friends said Blek had just left for New York about a week ago and planned to spend the summer there. He had just landed a summer job in real estate and planned to return in the fall to Fresno State, where he was a mathematics major.

According to friends, his parents were in New York Friday making plans to bring their son’s body to Orange County for burial. The funeral is scheduled for Tuesday.

Police said no one has been arrested in the case. But the same robbers are suspects in the fatal shooting of another man hours earlier in a Brooklyn neighborhood, police said.
