CS Fullerton to Settle With Nine Wrestlers

Share

Cal State Fullerton has agreed to pay nine members of the wrestling team a total of about $25,000 in financial aid because the school failed to follow NCAA guidelines when cutting their grants for the 1992-93 and 1993-94 school years.

Each case was heard individually by a committee from the Financial Aid Office after the students complained and asked for hearings. The committee agreed that the university had failed to notify the student-athletes in writing by July 1 of each year as specified by NCAA requirements.

The wrestlers have been notified by mail of their awards, which vary with each individual, according to Jerry Keating, Fullerton’s director of public affairs.

Skalde, a 23-year-old center, had nine points in 20 games for the Ducks and 63 points in 57 games for the San Diego Gulls of the International Hockey League. The Ducks can retain Skalde if they match another team’s contract offer. If he signs with another team, the Ducks would be entitled to compensation.

Halverson, a 23-year-old left wing who had 13 points in 58 games for the Gulls, did not play a game for the Ducks. Halverson is an unrestricted free agent, free to sign with any team.
