The passion for football that Calcuttans and Bangladeshis share is at odds with the sporting preference of the rest of the Subcontinent, which runs to cricket.
The time difference with America means that many Bengalis spend the evening and wee hours of the morning watching TV broadcasts of Cup games. Calcutta’s nighttime calm is often rent by throaty cries of “g-o-o-o-o-a-l!” from tens of thousands of households, especially if Argentina or Brazil is playing.
Family disputes reportedly are on the rise, as are stomach upsets caused by irregular sleeping schedules.
