In England, where taxi drivers and publicans consider themselves experts on soccer, high praise was given to the U.S. squad’s performance against Brazil.

In the Financial Times, Jurek Martin wrote: “Not all revolutions end with the good guys winning. The second ‘shot heard around the world’ came not from a young American in red, white and blue, but from Bebeto of Brazil in the 74th minute as the World Cup’s favorites ousted their hosts 1-0 on Independence Day. . . .

“The U.S. team certainly achieved all reasonable expectations. . . . July 4 commemorates victory over the Redcoats, but it was not enough to inspire the U.S. 218 years later to knock off the men in gold.”
