65-Year-Old Man Charged in 2 Assaults : Crime: A film technician allegedly posed as a police officer to abduct and sexually attack two women.

A 65-year-old film technician who allegedly posed as a Los Angeles police officer was charged Thursday with multiple counts of sexual assault after two victims identified him from police mug shots, authorities said.

Weldon Norman of Covina was charged with kidnaping, rape and impersonating a police officer, among other charges, said Phil Rabichow, a Los Angeles County deputy district attorney.

He was charged in two assaults that took place on June 29 and July 1 near a bus bench in front of a shopping center at the corner of Victory Boulevard and Vineland Avenue, said Detective Mike Coffey of the Los Angeles Police Department.

Norman wore a blue police jacket and carried a badge, a holstered handgun, handcuffs and a police flashlight, and he allegedly told his victims, young Latina women, that he was investigating their legal status in the United States, Coffey said.

“He is a predator, and he was using young, naive persons who may be afraid of the police,” Coffey said. “We have two victims in a week, and we don’t know if there are more or not.”

Investigators identified Norman through Department of Motor Vehicle records when the first victim saw him near the bus bench the day after she was abducted and took down his license plate number, Coffey said.

Both assaults took place around 6 a.m.

Norman, who used the alias Mark Weldon, was arrested Tuesday when police served search and arrest warrants at his Arrow Highway home, Coffey said.

Coffey said investigators recovered “crucial evidence” from Norman’s home.

The first case was turned over to robbery detectives as a kidnaping because the victim told police that the man drove her around for a period of time before dropping her off.

In the second assault, the victim told police that the man told her an identical story and identified himself as a police officer before he drove her to an unknown location and assaulted her, Coffey said.

Both women gave police similar descriptions of the assailant and his car, Coffey said.

Norman is being held at the Men’s Central Jail on $640,000 bail.

He was expected to be arraigned Thursday in the Van Nuys branch of the Los Angeles Municipal Court, according to a court clerk.
