Before Deciding Whether to Move Up, Gonzalez Faces Diaz Tonight at Forum
In his first bout since defeating Michael Carbajal last February for two-thirds of the major light-flyweight titles, Humberto (Chiquita) Gonzalez is scheduled to fight Armando Diaz in a 10-round nontitle fight tonight at the Forum.
Gonzalez, 38-2 with 26 knockouts, is about to decide whether to pursue a third fight against Carbajal or move up to take a shot at one of the flyweight titles. He fought and defeated Diaz (22-16, eight KOs) last November.
In the previous Diaz fight, Gonzalez threw more than 1,000 punches in 10 rounds, according to computer statistics.
That was Gonzalez’s last tuneup before the Carbajal rematch at the Forum, in which Gonzalez won a decision and the International Boxing Federation and World Boxing Council championships and avenged his knockout loss to Carbajal in 1993.
In a 10-round bout scheduled to precede the main event, undefeated junior-middleweight Alfred Ankamah (10-0, 10 KOs) will fight Luis Vasquez (29-6, 25 KOs).
