Matt Williams hit his 32nd and 33rd home runs to tie Ken Griffey Jr. of Seattle for the major league lead, and the Giants defeated the Philadelphia Phillies, 3-2, Friday night at San Francisco.

Barry Bonds tied the score in the sixth with his 23rd homer, and Williams put the Giants ahead with his second home run of the game. Williams, who also hit a solo shot in the fourth inning, has 10 homers in his last 16 games and is on a pace to tie Roger Maris’ record of 61 homers in a season, set in 1961.

All three San Francisco homers came off Fernando Valenzuela (0-2), who was making his third start for Philadelphia, which lost its sixth in seven games.

Darryl Strawberry got his first hit for the Giants in the fourth when he hit a bouncer to third and beat Mariano Duncan’s throw. The throw was wide and skipped past first baseman John Kruk, allowing Strawberry to take second.

Montreal 14, San Diego 0--The Expos pounded out 11 extra-base hits, including a team-record four triples, and Kirk Rueter pitched seven strong innings at San Diego.

Montreal, 7-0 against San Diego this season, established a season-high for runs and had 18 hits, one shy of its best total this season. Rueter (4-2), allowed three hits, struck out five and walked two in seven innings. He also had a run-scoring single. Andy Benes (6-10), coming off a one-hit shutout against New York, allowed seven runs and nine hits, eight for extra bases. He left without retiring a batter in the third.

Florida 5, Colorado 2--Gary Sheffield and Jeff Conine homered and three Florida pitchers combined on a five-hitter at Miami, as the Marlins ended the Rockies’ four-game winning streak.

Dave Weathers (8-7) allowed all five hits and two runs in 6 1/3 innings. Sheffield hit his 18th home run in the fourth inning after Jerry Browne singled for the first hit off Lance Painter (2-3).

Weathers’ strong pitching performance came the same day the Marlins announced that closer Bryan Harvey will have surgery on an aggravated muscle near his groin and might be lost for the season.

Cincinnati 12, Pittsburgh 4--Thomas Howard’s three-run home run highlighted an eight-run third inning that powered the Reds to their eighth consecutive victory over the Pirates at Cincinnati.

Cincinnati--which had four starters out of the lineup in left fielder Kevin Mitchell, center fielder Deion Sanders, shortstop Barry Larkin and second baseman Bret Boone--sent 11 batters to the plate in the third for its 26th comeback victory of the season. John Smiley (9-8) won his fifth consecutive start by allowing six hits over eight innings.

St. Louis 2, Atlanta 0--Bob Tewksbury pitched a four-hitter at Atlanta, for his first shutout in almost four years and the fourth of his career.

Tewksbury (10-7) gave up two singles in the first inning and a double by Jeff Blauser in the fourth. He retired 17 in a row until Blauser singled with two out in the ninth, then retired David Justice to complete his first shutout since Aug. 17, 1990.

Greg Maddux (11-5) suffered his third loss in his last four decisions.

Chicago 6, Houston 5--Mark Grace led off the 11th inning with his third home run of the season at Chicago, as the Cubs ended the Astros’ six-game winning streak.
