A 23-year-old man who barricaded himself in his father’s house early Saturday surrendered to police after officers lobbed a round of tear gas into the house, police said.

Police were called to the 15000 block of Harvest Street shortly before 1 a.m. when a man complained of trouble at the residence, said Los Angeles Police Lt. Jim Cansler. Once there, Cansler said, officers heard a single gunshot and the voice of a man shouting obscenities.

James Lee Parker, 60, then came out of the house and told police his son, Terry Parker, was on cocaine and threatening to kill himself, Cansler said.

At 5:15 a.m., after police heard several more shots inside the residence and negotiations with Strategic Weapons and Tactics team officers failed to bring Parker out of the residence, authorities fired tear gas into the home, Cansler said.

Parker exited the house, “taunting the officers to come and get him, brandishing the handgun and threatening suicide,” Cansler said.

At 5:35 a.m., Terry Parker surrendered to officers without incident. He is awaiting arraignment at the Van Nuys Jail on charges he brandished a handgun, Cansler said.

There were no injuries, Cansler said.
