Jurisprudence

An arraignment for Larry Demery and Daniel Green, the two teenagers charged with killing Michael Jordan’s father, has been postponed.

Robeson County District Attorney Richard Townsend told Durham, N.C., television station WTVD that no new date has been set for the hearing, which had been scheduled for today in Lumberton, N.C.

Demery and Green have been in the Robeson County Jail since their arrest last summer in the death of James Jordan.

Attorneys are still working through discovery motions in the case, WTVD reported.

Cycling

Denmark’s Bo Hamburger won the eighth stage of the Tour de France, and Johan Museeuw of Belgium retained the overall lead heading into a pivotal time trial.

Colombian Angel Camargo was second in the stage, with Rolf Aldag of Germany third and Frenchman Luc Leblanc fourth. All finished more than two minutes ahead of the pack.

For Hamburger, a pro since 1991, it was his first stage victory in the Tour.

Most of the 177 racers took it relatively easy on the 135-mile leg from Poitiers to Trelissac, conserving energy for today’s individual time trial of 40 miles from Perigueux to Bergerac.

Favorites Miguel Indurain of Spain and Tony Rominger of Switzerland stayed with the pack. Indurain, in seventh place, was only 30 seconds behind Museeuw. Rominger was another 28 seconds behind.

At Taipei, Taiwan, the United States defeated Japan, 87-84, to win William Jones Cup tournament. Japan’s Takehiko Orimo was the game’s top scorer with 23 points. Leading the U.S. was Jumoke Horton with 20.
