A trio if area players survived the first round of match play at the Women’s Trans-National Championship at Del Rio Country Club in Modesto.

Andrea Gaston of Chatsworth, Linda Chen Olsen of Granada Hills and Heidi Voorhees of Valley Village advanced to today’s morning round. A second round of match play follows in the afternoon and will pare the field to eight players.

Gaston, who tied for third in the stroke-play portion of the event, defeated Carolyn Creekmore of Dallas, 3 and 2. Gaston will face Pat Cornett-Iker of Corte Madera, Calif., today.

Chen Olsen defeated Ann Sander of Santa Barbara, 1 up. She will face former Walker Cup team member Leslie Shannon of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.

In a pairing of area players, Voorhees beat Jody Duclos of Moorpark, 4 and 2. Voorhees faces Tracy Thompson of Phoenix in the second round.

A second-round victory by Voorhees could set up an afternoon match with her former USC teammate, Jill McGill, who beat Voorhees in the Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship last month. McGill and Voorhees graduated from USC this year.

Darren Angel of Northridge improved his score by two shots in the second round of the American Junior Golf Assn. Rolex Tournament of Champions, but fell farther behind the leaders at the Oak Tree Country Club in Edmond, Okla.

Angel, a senior at Granada Hills High, shot a one-over-par 71 in the second round for a 36-hole total of 144. He is in a six-way tie for 13th place, seven shots behind leader Robert Floyd of Miami Beach, Fla., who shot a second-round 68. Floyd is the son of longtime PGA standout Ray Floyd.

Jason Semelsberger of Newhall shot 75 and missed the cut of 150 by one shot.

Jill Kaopua of Oxnard was eliminated in the first round of match play at the U.S. Junior Girls’ Championship at Meadow Lark Country Club in Great Falls, Mont.

Michelle Sperry of Poway, Calif., defeated Kaopua on the first playoff hole after their 18-hole match ended in a tie.

Tennis

Twins Mike and Bob Bryan of Camarillo remained undefeated after three matches to lead Southern California into the semifinals of the U.S. Tennis Assn. intersectional team championships at Pierrmonte Tennis Club in Shreveport, La.

Southern California will play Northern California today after defeating Hawaii, 9-0, and Pacific Northwest, 7-2.

The Channel Cities Municipal Athletic Assn. is sponsoring a youth tournament for boys and girls ages 8 to 16 at Oxnard Tennis Center on Saturday, Aug. 20.
