Darryl Strawberry hit his first major-league home run in more than a year, a grand slam for the San Francisco Giants on Thursday night against Montreal. Strawberry’s first homer for the Giants came in the fifth inning off Pedro Martinez and gave San Francisco a 7-1 lead. He had an RBI single in the first before later connecting for his sixth career slam.

Strawberry began the day 1-for-11 with no RBIs in four games for San Francisco. The Giants had won every game in which he played.

Strawberry’s last home run came on June 8, 1993, for Los Angeles. He was placed on the disabled list 10 days later because of back problems and missed the rest of the season.

The eight-time All-Star outfielder left the Dodgers without permission in April on the last day of spring training. He later said he had a substance abuse problem and spent 28 days in a treatment center.

Strawberry and the Dodgers negotiated a settlement in which he was released without playing a game this season. He was signed by the Giants on June 19 and played three games for Triple-A Phoenix, hitting two home runs.
