A split of the four-game series left the first-place Indians two percentage points ahead of the White Sox atop the AL Central.

David Cone (13-4), in his first start since the All-Star game, gave up six hits over eight innings, striking out nine and walking three. Jeff Montgomery earned his 17th save.

The Tigers had runners on first and second with two out in the sixth when Trammell lined a shot into left-center that looked like a certain double. But McRae, who had misplayed a ball earlier, made a great diving catch to end the inning.
