LAWNDALE : City’s Animal Control Services Contracted Out

Share

City officials have eliminated three part-time animal control positions and contracted out all animal control services to the Los Angeles Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals/Southern California Humane Society.

The city, which previously used the SPCA/SCHS only for after-hours services, made the change in order to offer more efficient animal control services, said Mike Kapanpour, city public works manager.

Although the new arrangement will cost about $1,000 more per year, more animals will be able to be licensed and the city will not be left with the tab, Kapanpour said.

Under the new contract, the Los Angeles SPCA/SCHS will collect all animal license fees and deduct them from the cost of services, Kapanpour said. Those services, which will cost the city about $32,000 a year, include stray and dead animal pickup, animal cruelty law enforcement, owner requested euthanasia and animal rescue emergencies.
