BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Lorraine to Start Against Yankees

Manager Marcel Lachemann liked what he saw during Andrew Lorraine’s three-inning major-league debut Sunday and inserted the rookie left-hander in the starting rotation. Lorraine will replace Russ Springer, a right-hander, for Friday night’s game against the Yankees.

“Chuck (Hernandez, Angel pitching coach) likes his weapons against the Yankees,” Lachemann said, “and we think he’s better suited to start right now than (Springer).”

Springer started Sunday’s game against the Orioles and gave up five earned runs, including two home runs, in three innings. Lorraine relieved and gave up nine hits and four earned runs in three innings.

Most of them were “pretty cheap hits,” Lachemann said.

The decision to play this weekend’s Red Sox-Mariner series in Boston instead of Seattle sent Boston players scurrying around Anaheim Stadium.

Right-hander Steve Farr was standing on the dugout steps with his cellular phone, trying to reach his wife, who had just landed in Seattle. First base coach Frank White was in the lobby trying to make reservations for a hotel in Boston.

And Manager Butch Hobson was wondering about the news. The Red Sox are 21-23 at Fenway Park this season.

Wives of the Angel players are playing host to hosting a canned food drive during the four- game series against the Yankees that which begins tonight. The drive is in association with the Food Distribution Center of Orange County. Fans bringing a canned food item will receive a photograph of a player from his wife.
