Pitcher Shawn Boskie was traded to the Seattle Mariners by the Philadelphia Phillies for a minor league player to be named. Boskie, 27, is 4-6 with a 5.23 ERA in 18 games and 84 1/3 innings this season, including 14 starts.

The Mariners said Boskie is expected to join them in Boston on Saturday.

Philadelphia Phillie Manager Jim Fregosi will miss no games during his treatment for chronic back problems, a team spokesman said. Larry Shenk said Fregosi was expected to be released from Thomas Jefferson University Hospital today before the Phillies play host to the San Diego Padres.

The Cleveland Indians put right-hander Mark Clark on the 15-day disabled list and recalled right-hander Jerry DiPoto from triple-A Charlotte. Clark’s right wrist was broken Wednesday night when he was hit on the pitching hand by a line drive by Texas’ Gary Redus. Cleveland’s winningest pitcher, Clark (11-3) will be in a cast for four to six weeks.

Owners will vote this year on whether to consider expansion. Bud Selig, baseball’s acting commissioner, has been under congressional pressure to take the step and Tuesday sent a letter promising the vote to Sen. Dennis DeConcini.

The Arizona Democrat, a member of the Judiciary Committee, has local interest in the matter, with Phoenix a leading prospect for expansion, along with St. Petersburg, Fla.
