Stich Gets German Jeers for Effort in Upset Loss

Playing before a home crowd, top-seeded and third-ranked Michael Stich was routed, 6-2, 6-2, by Andrea Gaudenzi, then jeered for his effort Friday in the Mercedes Cup at Stuttgart, Germany.

Also jeered was Yevgeny Kafelnikov, a 6-4, 6-0 loser to French Open finalist Alberto Berasategui.

In the other quarterfinal matches, Andrei Chesnokov upset third-seeded Thomas Muster, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, and Bernd Karbacher beat Lars Jonsson, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3).

The 10th-seeded Gaudenzi, who has jumped from 126th to 29th in the world this year, repeatedly passed Stich at the net and outplayed him from the baseline.

Spain, Germany and the United States coasted into the Federation Cup semifinals at Frankfurt, Germany, but third-seeded France struggled against Bulgarian sisters Katerina and Magdalena Maleeva, needing to win the doubles.

Julie Halard outlasted Katerina Maleeva, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, before Mary Pierce fell to Magdalena, 6-7 (6-8), 6-4, 6-4. Halard and Nathalie Tauziat defeated the Maleevas, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2, in doubles.

David Wheaton used a booming serve to overpower Michael Tebbutt, 6-4, 6-4, and advanced to the semifinals of the $650,000 Legg Mason Classic in Washington.

Wheaton will play Jason Stoltenberg, a 7-6 (7-5), 4-6, 6-3 winner over Brett Steven. In the other semifinal, second-seeded Stefan Edberg, a 6-4, 6-1 winner over Aaron Krickstein, will face Byron Black. Black defeated Thomas Enqvist, 7-5, 6-4.

Top-seeded Tina Karwasky of Glendale defeated unseeded Marlie Buehler of New York, 6-4, 7-5, in the semifinals of the U.S. Tennis Assn. Senior Women’s Championships in New York. Karwasky will play fourth-seeded Carole Ford of Bethesda, Md., in the finals.

William Sigei of Kenya shattered the world 10,000-meter record with a time of 26 minutes 52.23 seconds at the Bislett Games in Oslo, Norway, cutting more than six seconds off fellow Kenyan Yobes Ondieki’s old record.

Danish cyclist Michael Nielsen, 19, suffered a heart attack in the U.S. Olympic Training Center dining hall at Colorado Springs, but the USOC medical staff quickly responded and Nielsen was reported to be in a hospital, resting comfortably.
