BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : DODGERS : Claire Looking for a Young Left-Hander

Share

Fred Claire might not want to give up any young, quality players to acquire a veteran left-hander such as Randy Myers or John Franco, but the comments made by the club’s executive vice president Friday indicate that he is searching for a young, quality pitcher for the bullpen.

“I have talked with every American League and National League scout the last couple of days who have been out looking at our needs,” Claire said. “The ideal move for any club is to make a move involving young quality players. If I had the choice of a quality veteran player or a younger one, I would take a younger one.”

Claire, when asked if the search included any left-handers said: “I know all their names.”

Orel Hershiser played catch for the third time since straining a muscle in his rib cage and will probably throw off the mound Sunday. If all goes well, he will pitch Tuesday against the Giants in San Francisco. . . . Tom Candiotti will pitch tonight, making his third appearance in eight games. During his last two appearances, which came two days apart, he gave up only two unearned runs in 13 innings for a 1.38 earned-run average. Those are the only two games the Dodgers have won on this trip.

Jeff Treadway was ejected from Friday night’s game during the sixth inning by third base umpire Larry Vanover, who didn’t appreciate a comment made by Treadway from the dugout. One of the Dodger relievers had yelled something to Vanover after he called a ball hit by a Dodger foul. Vanover walked over to the end of the dugout, where the relievers were sitting, to find out who made the comment. Meanwhile, the game continued. “He had called time out, but the game was still going on,” bullpen coach Mark Cresse said. None of the Dodger relievers would confess, and Treadway, walking toward that end of the dugout, yelled to Vanover that the game was going on. “He was over there while the pitch was being thrown, so I yelled, ‘Hey, the game is going on,’ ” Treadway said. “He said, ‘One more word and you are out of here.’ I still don’t know why he threw me out.”
