A sheriff’s deputy shot and killed a man in a ski mask who was walking around a campground wielding a hammer.

Two deputies were called to KOA Kampgrounds on Thursday because residents complained that the man was acting strangely and scaring them.

“The deputies attempted to talk him into putting the hammer down,” said San Joaquin County Sheriff’s spokesman Mike Esau. “He walked toward them, holding the hammer above his head in an attack manner.”

The deputies squirted pepper spray at the man, then shot him after he hit one of them on the head.

The man, who was identified as Roddney M. Briles, 37, died at the scene. The injured deputy, who was not identified, was treated and released.
