Saugus to Scrap Sportsman Racing

Share

Saugus Speedway announced plans Wednesday to eliminate the Sportsman Division during the 1995 racing season because of increasing costs and dwindling participation.

Instead, the Late Model Division will be created and will take over as the elite division at Saugus. The Late Model Division will be formed from the current Pro Stock Division but will feature late-model bodies on a stock chassis, according to Ray Wilkings, track general manager.

“The Sportsman Division is suffering from cost escalation and the car count is graphic evidence of this,” Wilkings said.

In the new division, the bodies of the cars, all from 1990 or later, will be similar to those on the NASCAR Southwest and Northwest tours. Engines will remain stock.

A Pure Stock Division also will be established for entry-level drivers. The division will consist of American-made passenger cars with little modification except for safety-related equipment. The Grand American Modified, Street Stock and Mini-Stock divisions will return for 1995, Wilkings said.
