STRIKE? Baseball players have set an Aug. 12 strike deadline (C1), and former major-leaguer and Valley resident Pete Redfern thinks they’ll go through with it. . . . “It doesn’t surprise me one bit,” he said. “The players union is one of the strongest in the country. But I’d hate to see it.” Redfern, City Section player of the year for Sylmar in 1972, played for the Minnesota Twins (and was part of the 1981 players strike). He is now a coach with The Master’s College in Newhall.

DOWN A NOTCH: You can’t stay on top of the charts forever, as an R&B; group with strong Antelope Valley ties learned this week. . . . The group All-4-One, which has three members from the Antelope Valley, saw their hit “I Swear” drop to second after 11 weeks atop Billboard’s list.

WATER: There may be no Fountains of Youth in the San Fernando Valley, but, from CityWalk in Universal City (above) to Topanga Plaza in Canoga Park, there sure are plenty of fountains for youth, and anyone else, for that matter. . . . “We live in a desert,” said Barbara Piniero of Santa Monica, “so the presence of water is essential.” See Valley Life! LOCAL HERO: He’s a sports legend who lives in Encino but you may not be able to name his accomplishment. That would be Alex Olmedo. . . . Olmedo, 58, beat Rod Laver to win the Wimbledon tennis title in 1959. He’s still on top of his game, making the finals last week at the U.S. Tennis Assn.’s 55-and-over national singles hard-court championships (C10).
