Tourist Killed Walking Across Freeway
A tourist from Coventry, England, who wandered onto the Costa Mesa Freeway early Sunday was struck by a car and killed, police said.
Paul Clive Straiton, 38, was pronounced dead at Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian about 1 a.m., according to a statement issued by Sgt. D. Walker. The driver, an 18-year-old Fountain Valley man, was not cited, Walker said.
The driver told police he was traveling south on the freeway in the slow lane, just north of 19th Street, when the headlights of his car revealed Straiton crossing the highway, Walker said. The driver tried to stop but hit Straiton.
Police investigators said the driver apparently was not intoxicated.
The incident remains under investigation, Walker said.
