Share

Two men were wounded early Wednesday when a gunman opened fire in an alleyway for no apparent reason, police said.

The gunman and a companion--described as white men in their early 20s--fled after the shooting on the 7600 block of Amberleaf Circle.

Juan Vergara, 22, was reported in critical condition Wednesday at UCI Medical Center in Orange after undergoing surgery for a gunshot wound to the stomach. Angel Campos Silia, 22, was released Wednesday afternoon from Western Medical Center-Santa Ana after being treated for wounds to the thigh. Both victims are of Huntington Beach.

A friend of the two men who was at the scene was not injured.

The victims were in the alley shortly after midnight when the two assailants approached and one suddenly fired five or six rounds from a small-caliber handgun, said Lt. Luis Ochoa. He said the victims apparently did not know the attackers.

“There’s absolutely no idea about the reason for the shooting,” Ochoa said. “As far as a motive, we just don’t know right now.”

The gunman was described as being about 5 feet, 7 inches tall with close-cropped light hair. He was wearing gray pants and a white T-shirt, Ochoa said.
