BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE MAJORS : Reds’ Sanders Arrested for Exit

Share

The Reds’ Deion Sanders was arrested on misdemeanor charges after Monday night’s game at Riverfront Stadium when a security guard alleged that Sanders tried to leave on his motor scooter through a pedestrian gate and dragged the police officer on the ground for about 15 feet. The guard suffered minor injuries.

Sanders, who posted bail and started in center field Tuesday night, claimed the guard instigated the incident, which resulted in charges of resisting arrest and failing to provide a driver’s license. Each charge carries a maximum sentence of six months in jail and a $1,000 fine. A pretrial hearing was set for Sept. 13. Police have not decided whether to add an assault charge.

Sanders said he was trying to leave from a different exit to avoid the fans who were waiting for him after the game and have recently began to grab at him as he leaves on his motor scooter. Sanders claims the guard never told him he was under arrest and that he drove off because the guard was trying to pull him down.

“All I told him was that you should not talk to people in that way, we should respect each other,” Sanders said.
