Sally Gunnell of Great Britain outclassed runner-up Silvia Rieger of Germany by more than eight meters to win the women’s 400-meter hurdles final at the European Championships in Helsinki, Finland, the only big title missing from her remarkable collection.

Gunnell now owns Olympic, World, Commonwealth and European titles.

Gunnell clocked a world seasonal best of 53.33 seconds despite being unchallenged on the homestretch.

Rieger finished in 54.68 and Anna Knoroz of Russia placed third in 57.68.

Germany’s Heike Drechsler won the long jump with an opening-round effort of 23 feet, 5 1/4 inches.

Boxing

Former heavyweight champion Riddick Bowe returns to the ring tonight on HBO against Buster Mathis Jr. in Bowe’s first bout since he lost the title to Evander Holyfield last November.

Bowe, assuming a victory, has signed to fight World Boxing Council champion Lennox Lewis in December, or more likely, March, in a high-profile meeting of the two heavyweights generally considered to be more talented than champion Michael Moorer.

Auto Racing

Al Unser Jr. broke the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course track record to take the provisional pole for Sunday’s Miller Genuine Draft 200 Indy-car race at Lexington, Ohio.

Unser, the leader in the season points standings, had a fast lap of 119.517 m.p.h. around the 2.25-mile circuit. That bettered the mark of 118.372 m.p.h. set last year by Britain’s Nigel Mansell.

Unser set his record on the last lap of qualifying.

Unser’s Penske Racing teammates, Paul Tracy and Emerson Fittipaldi, had the second- and third-fastest speeds.

Fort Worth television station KTVT-TV, where Oliver J. Miller turned himself in, identified the 54-year-old Fort Worth man as the father of the Suns forward. Family members told the television station the two have not spoken in years.

Police said they arrested Miller Sr. on a probable cause warrant for murdering Emmett Allen.

KTVT reported that Miller Sr. said he shot Allen on Tuesday after being swindled out of about $100,000 worth of properties.
