Residents fled two small vacation communities Monday as wind-driven forest fires in central Idaho menaced their homes and their routes to safety.

The Corral Fire was fewer than six miles west of the resort of Burgdorf Hot Springs and the Blackwell Complex of fires was only seven miles southwest of the summer homes in Secesh Meadows. The two communities are about 130 miles north of Boise.

The Corral Fire had covered 32,000 acres and the Blackwell Complex 25,000 acres before both made big runs Monday in what fire bosses called “blowup conditions.” The fires were so erratic that more than 1,000 square miles of forest were closed to public access.
