A 22-year-old Oxnard man trying to break up a fight at a party early Tuesday by shooting his handgun into the air was arrested by Ventura County sheriff’s deputies after he accidentally wounded a party-goer, authorities said.

Leonardo Bravo Sanchez was among five to 10 men attending a party at about 1:45 a.m. in the yard of a home in the 3400 block of Somis Road, Sheriff’s Sgt. Keith Lazz said.

When a fistfight broke out among the party-goers, Sanchez shot a 9 millimeter semiautomatic handgun into the air about half a dozen times, Lazz said.

But one of the shots struck Fernando Padilla, causing a serious laceration but no internal damage, Lazz said. Padilla was treated at Pleasant Valley Hospital in Camarillo and released. No one else was injured.

Sanchez was arrested on suspicion of discharging a firearm in a grossly negligent manner and causing injury, a felony.

He is being held at Ventura County Jail in lieu of $5,000 bail and faces arraignment on Thursday, a jail official said.
