PRO FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : RAMS : Gilbert, Robinson Join Injured List

The Rams, already without defensive end Fred Stokes for at least another week because of a knee injury, lost defensive tackle Sean Gilbert (injured knee, ankle) and defensive end Gerald Robinson (ankle) in the first half of a 29-20 loss to the Raiders on Saturday.

On Sunday, Coach Chuck Knox was most concerned about the condition of Gilbert, who will probably sit out Thursday’s game against the San Diego Chargers. Knox said the ankle injury was Gilbert’s most serious.

“We don’t know how long Sean will be out,” Knox said. “Sometimes it takes as long as 10 days.”

Knox said Gilbert would not undergo an MRI exam on the knee.

Robinson will also sit out practice today and is doubtful for the Charger game.

Even the standing defensive linemen were in bad shape. Defensive tackle Jimmie Jones has a sprained wrist and might be held out of the Charger game, Knox said.

“We expect to go in there with (Marc) Boutte and (David Rocker) and see what they can do,” Knox said. “We’ve had some injuries and we’re getting them at one position.”

With the injuries mounting, Knox said the Rams might make a move this week. The team had former Washington Redskin Charles Mann in for a workout Wednesday and former Seattle Seahawk Jeff Bryant followed on Thursday. Knox said, of the two, the team would lean more toward signing Mann, who is a defensive end.

Mann has had nine knee operations, two in the past year.

“Jeff Bryant could play (defensive end) but he’s a better inside player,” Knox said. “We have not made a decision yet. (Today) might be a little too soon.”

Teams cut their rosters to 60 on Tuesday, meaning more defensive ends will be available.
