LA HABRA : Traffic Light to Be Put Up Near School

Share

City workers will soon install a traffic signal at the intersection of La Habra Boulevard and McPherson Street in an attempt to keep automobiles from hitting students walking to or from school.

City Council members voted for the street light last week.

The move was prompted by the death four months ago of a teen-ager who was hit near the intersection as she walked to school.

Edelmira Marin, 17, was crossing La Habra Boulevard at the College Street crosswalk on her way to Sonora High School when she was struck and killed by a car whose driver apparently failed to see her.

The accident happened in front of Washington Middle School, where administrators and parents had in the past complained about unsafe driving.

City Manager Lee Risner said the street light will be installed in the next seven months.

In addition to installing the light, the city will prohibit autos from stopping on a portion of La Habra Boulevard fronting the middle school.

In addition, marked crosswalks on the boulevard at College, Valencia and Sunset streets will be removed so that pedestrians will cross at the McPherson light.
