Flames Engulf, Kill Volunteer Firefighter

SAMS VALLEY, Ore. —
A volunteer tractor operator who spent long days trying to help contain a 4,500-acre wildfire was killed when flames exploded through the area where he was cutting firebreaks.
Sydney Bruce Maplesden Jr., 25, was killed Thursday night by a fire that had advanced within two miles of this rural community, where more than 100 homes had been evacuated.
