Highlights

Foothill looked like anything but a champion after dropping its first three games. Then quarterback Kevin Daft found the mark. Daft averaged barely 100 yards per game passing in nonleague play, but finished the regular season with 1,211 yards and nine touchdowns. The Knights stomped through league play and reached the quarterfinals of the Southern Section Division IV playoffs. They lost to eventual champion Irvine, 27-24. Villa Park finished second, but had the league’s most exciting player in Grant Pearsall, who is now at USC. He gained 1,551 yards rushing and scored 23 touchdowns, five on kick returns. The Spartans advanced to the quarterfinals before losing to Sherman Oaks Notre Dame, 33-6. Canyon, which had not been to the playoffs since 1986, started the season 6-0-1. The Comanches then hit the skids. They were tied by El Modena, then lost to Villa Park and Foothill. Still, they reached the playoffs and threw a scare into No. 1-seeded Moreno Valley Canyon Springs, losing 27-21.
