Countywide : County to Reinforce Newport Bay Slopes

Share

County officials plan to spend $111,000 later this year to repair crumbling slopes in Upper Newport Bay Regional Park.

The slopes are next to Backbay Drive in Newport Beach and began eroding last year after heavy rainfall saturated the soil, said William L. Zaun, the county’s director of public works.

Officials want to repair the slopes before a major landslide occurs, possibly closing Backbay Drive.

The county is now seeking bids for the job, which will involve installing a drainage system in the hillside area. Workers will also compact some of the soil to make it stronger, Zaun said.

Backbay Drive will be closed periodically during construction. Officials hope to have the job completed by the end of the year.
