Massimino Won’t Take Legal Action

Nevada Las Vegas basketball Coach Rollie Massimino says he will not take legal action if the university decides not to honor a secret contract that was supposed to pay him an additional $375,000 a year.

Massimino also said he has no intention of resigning.

UNLV interim President Kenny Guinn told the state Board of Regents that Massimino’s secret contract is against state law because it was not brought before the regents for approval. Guinn also said he has no intention of bringing the contract before the regents for approval.

Hockey

Right wing John Druce reached a new contract agreement with the Kings. The three-year deal--two years plus an option--is worth $1.6 million, according to sources.

In other moves, the Kings came to terms with center Kevin Todd, agreeing to a two-year contract worth about $850,000, and named Ace Bailey, a veteran NHL scout who last worked for the Edmonton Oilers, director of pro scouting.

Assault charges against New Jersey Net forward Derrick Coleman were dismissed after prosecutors told a Manhattan judge they could not prove their case.

Coleman, 27, had been charged with two counts of third-degree assault and one count of second-degree harassment for allegedly beating up three teen-agers outside a Manhattan bar.

Bob Hill wasted no time filling his staff with the San Antonio Spurs, hiring Hall of Fame center Dave Cowens, former NBA guard Paul Pressey and longtime college coach Hank Egan as assistant coaches.

The Clippers have re-signed forward Charles Outlaw. Contract terms weren’t disclosed, but Outlaw, who averaged 6.9 points, 5.7 rebounds and 1.0 block shots in 37 games as a rookie last season, is believed to have signed for about $250,000 for one year.

Property owners fighting for control of land surrounding The Ballpark in Arlington have sued Texas Ranger managing general partner and Texas gubernatorial candidate George W. Bush, other Rangers owners and the club’s law firm, accusing them of conspiring to illegally obtain the land by allegedly coercing the city of Arlington to condemn private property for ventures benefiting the Rangers.

Pitcher Chan Ho Park, who began the season with the Dodgers and now plays for the San Antonio Missions of the double-A Texas League, has a ligament sprain in his right elbow and is expected to rest his arm for at least three weeks. . . . San Diego State Athletic Director Fred Miller, 63, said he will retire effective Dec. 31. . . . A New Jersey man told Philadelphia police that Eagle running back Herschel Walker assaulted him in the Veterans Stadium parking lot Wednesday afternoon. Michael Depalma, 33, of Cherry Hill, N.J., filed a complaint alleging that Walker grabbed him during an argument over a blocked parking space.
