NOTEBOOK / GARY KLEIN : Azusa Pacific Faces Redlands as Milhon Starts His Final Season as Coach

The college football season opens Saturday for all but one San Gabriel Valley school.

Azusa Pacific Coach Jim Milhon beings his 17th and final season when the Cougars travel to NCAA Division III power Redlands. Azusa Pacific finished 3-6 in 1993 and is 79-62-4 under Milhon.

La Verne, defending champion of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, plays host to Menlo. The Leopards finished 7-2 and 6-0 in the SCIAC last season under Coach Rex Huigens.

Pomona-Pitzer, under first-year Coach Roger Caron, plays host to Macalaster (Minn.). The Sagehens were 1-7-0 in 1993. Claremont, which finished 1-6-1 last season, opens next week against Cal Lutheran.

Dean Karnoski, who built Glendora High into a perennial Southern Section power, makes his debut as coach at Citrus when the Owls play host to Glendale. Citrus finished 8-3 and 6-1 in the Foothill Conference last season under Mike Merandi.

Mt. San Antonio, under Coach Bill Fisk, opens against Fullerton. The Mounties finished 9-2 and 8-2 in the Mission Conference in 1993.

Pasadena travels to Orange Coast for an opener that will mark the PCC debut of former All-Southern Section running back Saladin McCullough. Coach Dennis Gossard is in his eighth season with the Lancers, who finished 3-7 last season.

The Azusa Pacific women’s volleyball team opened the season last weekend by winning the Grand Canyon tournament at Phoenix.

Tiara Ainnu, a junior outside hitter for the Cougars, was named most valuable player of the tournament.

Cal Poly Pomona, ranked ninth in the NCAA Division II preseason poll, begins its season Friday against fifth-ranked Metro State at the Western Invitational tourna ment at UC Davis.

The Pasadena Quarterbacks Club is celebrating its 50th year this season with a schedule of guest speakers from college and pro football.

The nonprofit group sponsors a luncheon each Friday at the Brookside Golf Course Clubhouse. Cost is $10 for members, $15 for non-members. Proceeds go toward scholarships for Pasadena-area athletes.

This week’s speaker is Steve Wilensky, assistant athletic director at Southern Methodist University. Future speakers include USC Coach John Robinson.

Nonprofit youth groups from the San Gabriel Valley are invited to participate in the 1994-95 Athletics for Youth program sponsored by the UCLA athletic department.

A golf tournament sponsored by the San Gabriel Chamber of Commerce is scheduled to be played Wednesday at Brookside Golf Course in Pasadena.

A benefit golf tournament and banquet sponsored by the Hispanic American Police Command Officers Assn. is scheduled for Sept. 30 at Alhambra Municipal Golf Course.

Entry is $70 and includes golf, cart, dinner and prizes. Proceeds will benefit the organization’s scholarship fund for graduating high school seniors.

The third annual Bowl to Bowl Walk, featuring a 1.5-mile recreational walk, a 5-K fitness walk and a 5-K sanctioned race walk, is scheduled for 1 p.m. Oct. 30 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.

The walks are open to all ages. Entry is $5 and $2 for people 50 and over. A health and fitness fair, featuring health screenings, informational booths and refreshments, is scheduled from 1 to 4 p.m.
