PREP FOOTBALL ROUNDUP

Franklin 27, Roosevelt 14--It’s no wonder Coach Armando Gonzalez is “glad to be back” in the game he says he missed and with the team he last coached in 1989. His senior quarterback Jeff Deno tossed four touchdown passes, going 10 for 14 and throwing for 239 yards while senior wide receiver Johnnie Sanders caught four passes for 128 yards and two touchdowns in a nonleague game. One came on Franklin’s first offensive play when he turned a short pass into an 80-yard score, breaking several tackles before sprinting away from the Roughriders.

Small but tough, the Roughriders came back behind sophomore quarterback Fernando Delgadillo, who carried for two second-quarter touchdowns to give Roosevelt a 14-7 halftime lead.

The Panthers opened the second half with a nine-play, 65-yard drive but trailed 14-13 when the point-after kick sailed wide. On successive possessions, Deno hit sophomore running back Oscar Canela for scoring passes of 30 and five yards to put the game away.
