A 6-year-old girl was struck and critically injured by a car Saturday morning as she tried to cross the street in a quiet residential neighborhood, authorities said.

The girl was attempting to cross the street about 9 a.m. in the 10400 block of Debra Avenue when she was struck by a Nissan Maxima driven by Rozik Nazarian, 52, of Granada Hills.

The injured girl’s 8-year-old brother watched from the sidewalk, police said. Police did not know whether the children were being supervised by an adult at the time.

The girl, whom police declined to identify, was flown to Children’s Hospital in Hollywood and was in critical condition on a life-support system, a nursing supervisor said. Police said the child suffered severe head injuries.

“The girl crossed the street mid-block,” said Los Angeles Police Sgt. Ben Lee. “The driver said she didn’t see her until it was too late.”

Witnesses said Nazarian was driving about 45 m.p.h., a speed that is not considered reckless, police said. Nazarian was not arrested, but the investigation will continue, Lee said.
