One day before the school year began for the 8,600 students of the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District, Ann N. Chlebicki, 44, was named superintendent.

Chlebicki will earn $104,000 a year under a three-year contract unanimously approved by the school board Sept. 7. The contract begins Oct. 10.

Chlebicki was assistant superintendent of instructional services for the 28,000-student Saddleback Valley Unified School District in Orange County.

“When I was checking (Chlebicki’s) references, just about everybody was very negative--about the prospect of losing her,” said board member Barry J. Hildebrand, a trustee.

She said she will continue to live in Huntington Beach.

Chlebicki’s appointment ends a search begun in April after Michael W. Caston left to become superintendent in Santa Barbara.
