Comedian George Burns was reported sitting up and joking with nurses Wednesday, two days after surgery to drain fluid from his brain.

Doctors at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center planned to move the 98-year-old entertainer to a private room today and predicted he would be home within a week.

Neurologist Martin Cooper and Burns’ personal physician, Gary Sugarman, “expressed their satisfaction with how well George is doing,” according to hospital spokesman Ron Wise.

The comic’s longtime friend and manager, Irving Fein, told reporters during a hospital news conference that Burns had eaten his breakfast and was sitting up telling jokes.

“He’s had three or four nurses and he’s doing his act. He’s singing some of his songs that he does in his act. They are all laughing. He’s having a good time,” Fein said.

Burns underwent two hours of surgery after being admitted to the hospital Monday. The operation relieved pressure from fluid that built up after he injured his head when he fell in his bathtub.
