SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

A man who left the scene of a fatal hit-and-run jet-ski accident at Castaic Lake during Labor Day weekend is being sought for questioning by police, authorities said Wednesday.

A friend found the body of Louie Ronald Ellis, 51, of Glendora, floating in a portion of the lake reserved for jet skiers at about 10:15 a.m. on Sept. 4. Investigators said the accident may have occurred up to half an hour before Ellis was discovered.

Several witnesses said they saw a second jet skier leave the scene shortly after the time the accident is believed to have occurred, but investigators are not yet calling that man a suspect, said Deputy Gabe Ramirez of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

“The extent of his involvement has not been determined,” Ramirez said. “However, detectives are circulating the composite drawing of him because they want to speak with him.”

About 40 to 50 other jet skiers were using the lake at the time, but none apparently saw the accident, authorities said.

The man is described as a white male of stocky build in his early 30s, about six feet tall, with dark, curly hair and a mustache, Ramirez said. Witnesses told homicide investigators the man was riding a green-and-white See-Doo brand jet ski, and left the beach area of the lake in a late-model, teal Chevrolet pickup truck with an extended cab.

The accident represents the first death at the lake this year and the third since the recreation area opened in 1972.

Anyone with information about the accident or the man being sought is asked to call Michael Crowley or Henry Reed at the sheriff’s homicide unit at (213) 890-5500.
