Orange County High School Football PREP EXTRA : El Toro Blitz Shuts Down Dana Hills

Share

El Toro used a simple recipe in Friday night’s 10-0 victory over Dana Hills--solid defense mixed with a balanced offense and, when in doubt, add a little Mo.

The Chargers (1-1) defense, using a variety of blitzes, held Dana Hills to 66 yards total offense, most of those coming late in the game.

“We felt we could match up well with them and play man-to-man, which would allow us to blitz more,” El Toro Coach Mike Milner said.

And his idea worked well, as the Chargers had four sacks and forced Dana Hills quarterback Scott Maynard to scramble several other times to avoid more sacks.

El Toro used a ground-control offense that moved the ball but never reached the end zone until Mo Sango became part of the mix. Sango touched the ball three times on a four-play drive, including a 43-yard touchdown catch of a Brian Wilson pass. Sango’s spin move at the 25 left Dolphin players grasping at air as he raced into the end zone.

“Mo is a multi-dimensional player,” Milner said. “We added a couple things this week to try to get the ball in his hands a little more, and we hoped it would pay off.’

El Toro opened the scoring on their first possession when they marched 53 yards on seven plays and scored when Chad Johnson kicked a 23-yard field goal to put the Chargers up, 3-0.
