Share

A 22-year-old man was listed in critical condition Wednesday with wounds suffered when he was shot in the chest by unidentified attackers while driving his car along South Newhope Boulevard late Tuesday.

Benjamin Rivas of Santa Ana lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a tree after he was shot once with a semiautomatic handgun, police Lt. Dave Petko said.

Police believe the attack was gang-related but have no witnesses. Petko said a small white car was seen speeding away from the scene after the 9:05 p.m. assault.

Police were called to the 300 block of South Newhope by residents who heard gunfire. When they arrived, Petko said, Rivas was slumped in the driver’s seat, bleeding from the gunshot wound.

Police were still seeking information Wednesday on the identity and whereabouts of Rivas’ attackers.
