World War II brought sudden development to the bean fields of central Costa Mesa.
In 1943, the military converted 1,283 acres of mostly vacant land between Harbor and Newport boulevards into the Santa Ana Army Air Base.
The base was used to train pilots, according to the book “Historic Place Names in Orange County.”
After the war, the base closed and the land divided among several public agencies. Orange Coast College was built on a chunk of the land. The base land is also home to a portion of the Orange County Fairgrounds.
