PREP EXTRA / SATURDAY FOOTBALL PULLOUT : California High Takes Advantage of La Habra’s Mistakes
Whittier California capitalized on three first-half mistakes to stop a 14-game losing streak with a 23-13 victory over La Habra in a nonleague game Friday night at La Habra High School.
A fumbled punt return midway through the first quarter gave the Condors the ball on the La Habra 14-yard line. Richard Armero scored on a three-yard run.
On the next play from scrimmage, the Highlanders (1-2) fumbled again on their 18-yard line. Quarterback David Baruch scored on a one-yard dive to give California a 14-0 lead with 54 seconds left in the first quarter.
An unsuccessful fake punt by La Habra on its 41-yard line set up Dwayne Brown, who scored on an eight-yard run.
La Habra finally scored when Will McIntosh caught a 13-yard touchdown pass from Sonje Berg to cut the lead to 21-7 at halftime.
