AND ONE MORE THING: “I’m tired of reading articles about what women in rock are wearing and who they’re dating,” says Carla De Santis, a Bay Area musician-journalist who’s going to try to do something about it: She’s starting her own magazine, Rockrgrl, focusing on the less surface-oriented aspects of women in music, with hopes for a January debut.

De Santis, under the code name Rockrgrl, is well-known to America Online computer users as an eloquent observer of the alternative-rock scene.

In researching her project, De Santis came across some interesting figures that underscored what she views as a real void in such coverage. Analyzing the major pop music publications, including Rolling Stone, Spin and Option, she found that about only 15% of their stories feature women musicians.
