FOOTBALL ROUNDUP : Fullerton Makes Mistakes, but Beats Magnolia
Fullerton, plagued by 10 penalties and four turnovers, held off a late Magnolia rally and defeated the Sentinels, 14-12, in a nonleague game Saturday at Glover Stadium.
Christopher Young, Fullerton’s 165-pound running back, rushed for 109 yards in 20 carries, including a second-quarter touchdown run that gave the Indians the lead for good.
In the first quarter, Fullerton (2-1) survived three turnovers and five penalties, one of which negated a 98-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Young.
After the touchdown was called back, the ball was placed at the Fullerton 41-yard line, where the Indians fumbled on their next play. When Magnolia took possession after the fumble, a Robert Nicols pass was intercepted by Rudy Vejar, but the play was negated on a roughing-the-passer penalty.
Nicols, who completed 16 of 35 passes for 265 yards, found wide receiver John Redding on a nine-yard scoring pass for the quarter’s only score.
Fullerton, however, responded with an 11-play, 72-yard drive that consumed nearly five minutes of the second quarter. Young capped the drive with a 10-yard touchdown to give the Indians a 7-6 lead.
