PREP ROUNDUP : Corbin Leads No. 1 Irvine Past No. 3 El Toro
Top-ranked Irvine continued its quest to repeat as Division I State champion, defeating No. 3 El Toro, 17-38, in girls’ cross-country Thursday at Irvine High.
Irvine’s Jessica Corbin surprised no one, taking an early lead and breezing to a first-place finish. Corbin, competing in her second meet since recovering from a hip injury, finished the three-mile race in 18 minutes 1 second.
The Vaqueros (2-0) took five of the top six spots. Anna-Kaisa Niemi finished second in 18:33 and Erin Livermore took third in 18:41.
“I was thrilled with our performance,” Vaquero Coach Randy Rossi said. “I was very impressed with the way the girls ran their race.”
Stacey Roberson was the top finisher for the Chargers (1-1), finishing fourth in 19:02.
In the boys’ race, El Toro (2-0) easily defeated Irvine (0-2), 19-44. The Chargers’ John Glover won in 16:09. Irvine’s Justin Nyberg finished right behind Glover in 16:13. The next six spots belonged to El Toro.
El Toro’s Martin Pennell, in his first race after a car accident which put him and teammate Tomas Mejia in the hospital, took fifth place in 16:27. Mejia remains hospitalized in a coma.
