VENTURA : Volunteers Join to Clean Up Ventura High

Share

About 450 students, parents and community members converged Saturday on Ventura High School for the campus’ fourth annual cleanup day.

The effort to spiff up the school was part of a program called Students Earning Revenue for Ventura High School Enrichment, or SERVE.

Starting at 8 a.m., about 350 students and 100 parents and other volunteers used brooms, sponges, mops and heavier equipment to attack the dirt and grime that have built up at the school over the last year.

A few spent hours digging trenches for a new sprinkling system. The crew of volunteers finished at about 2 p.m.

“We had a great day and got a ton of stuff done,” said Assistant Principal Larry Emrich. “It was just super.”

Many local businesses chipped in by donating goods and services, Emrich said. The students collected pledges for each hour of work they put in, raising about $7,500, Emrich said.

Most of the money will go back to various school organizations, based on the designations of the student volunteers, officials said. About 4% of the proceeds will go toward administrative costs.
