REGIONAL ROUNDUP : Texas A&M; Rallies to Keep Streak Alive

No. 10 Texas A&M; rallied from a 10-point halftime deficit to defeat Texas Tech, 23-17, Saturday in a Southwest Conference game at College Station, Tex.

The Aggies extended their home winning streak to 23 games, longest in the nation. The Aggies (4-0, 1-0) have a 55-3-1 record in Kyle Field since late in the 1984 season.

Texas Tech (2-3, 1-1) used a 73-yard pass play off a fake punt to set up one touchdown and a 17-yard interception return for another touchdown to take a 17-7 halftime lead.

Tech was still ahead, 17-14, in the fourth quarter when Corey Pullig, who passed for only 15 yards in the first half, connected with Chris Sanders on a 45-yard pass play to set up the go-ahead touchdown.

Adrian Robinson returned an interception 89 yards for a touchdown, Tyrone Smith took a blocked punt two yards for a score and Glenn Coy had a 15-yard fumble return for a score as Baylor (4-1, 1-0) scored a 42-18 victory over Texas Christian (2-3, 0-2) in an SWC game at Ft. Worth, Tex.

EAST

Keith Price ran for two touchdowns and Chris Hetherington passed to Dan Iwan for a touchdown late in the fourth quarter to lead Yale (3-0) to a 28-17 victory over Connecticut (1-4) at New Haven, Conn. . . . Kwelli Thompson ran for 174 yards and a touchdown and Eion Hu ran for 157 yards and two scores as Harvard (2-1) relied on ball control in a 27-17 victory over Holy Cross (0-4) at Worcester, Mass. . . . Chad Levitt ran for a career-high 144 yards and scored three touchdowns to lead Cornell (3-0) to a 21-17 victory over Lehigh (2-1-1). . . . Quarterback Mike Cavanaugh had touchdown runs of 24 and 33 yards in the fourth quarter as Columbia (1-1-1) defeated Lafayette, 28-13, at New York. The Lions broke a 12-game losing streak against the Leopards (0-4). . . . Jason McCullough completed 17 of 28 passes for 233 yards and two touchdowns to lead Brown (2-1) to a 26-7 victory over Colgate (1-3) at Providence, R.I. It was the Bears’ first victory over Colgate since 1968. . . . Quarterback Ren Riley scored twice in the second quarter and passed to David Shearer for two touchdowns as Dartmouth (1-2) rolled to a 31-14 victory over Fordham (0-5) at Hanover, N.H. . . . Linebacker Tim Greene blocked and recovered a fourth-quarter punt in the end zone to lift Princeton (2-1) to a 12-7 victory over Bucknell at Princeton, N.J.

MIDWEST

Restored to the starting quarterback job after three weeks on the bench, Chad Johnston passed for 291 yards and two touchdowns to lead West Virginia (2-3) to a 34-10 victory over Missouri (2-4) at Columbia, Mo. West Virginia, which won its first 11 games last season, snapped a three-game losing streak. Getting a bye last week didn’t help Missouri, which lost for the third consecutive time at home. . . . Ryan Henry passed for 181 yards and three touchdowns as Bowling Green (4-1) won, 38-0, over host Cincinnati (0-3-1).

SOUTH

Oklahoma State defeated North Texas State, 36-34, at Stillwater, Olka., but the Division I-AA Eagles (2-2) appeared to have a victory locked up over the Cowboys (3-1) when they led, 34-31, and forced the Cowboys to punt with 2:10 remaining. But Greg Ivy’s punt went 71 yards to the five, and North Texas State took a safety four plays later. Oklahoma State quarterback Tone’ Jones completed two critical passes and Lawson Vaughn kicked a field goal with seven seconds left. . . . Anthony Shelman rushed for a career-high 160 yards and three touchdowns, including an 84-yard scamper in the third quarter and the go-ahead score in the fourth quarter, to rally Louisville (2-2) to a 33-29 victory over Pittsburgh (1-4) at Louisville, Ky. . . . East Carolina took advantage of eight turnovers and running back Junior Smith set a school career rushing record as the Pirates (2-2) cruised to a 31-10 victory over Southern Mississippi (2-3) at Greenville, N.C.

WEST

Senior Anthoney Hill threw for a career-best 364 yards and three touchdowns and No. 24 Colorado State equaled its best start in 17 years with a 38-31 Western Athletic Conference victory over New Mexico at Albuquerque, N.M. Hill completed 25 of 35 passes for the Rams (5-0, 4-0). New Mexico is 0-5, 0-2. . . . Shawn Gray threw two fourth-quarter touchdown passes to lead Texas El Paso (2-3, 1-2) to a 34-28 WAC victory over turnover-prone Hawaii (2-3, 0-3) at El Paso, Tex. Gray completed only six of 20 passes but threw for 174 yards and he also rushed 21 times for 151 yards and ran for a two-point conversion.

In a Big West game at Las Cruces, N.M., Randy Gatewood caught three touchdown passes, the last a three-yarder from Jared Brown with 4:57 remaining, and Marvin Robinson made a game-saving defensive play in the final seconds as Nevada Las Vegas (3-2, 2-0) scored a 31-27 victory over New Mexico State (2-3, 1-1). Gatewood, who set a major college record by catching 23 passes against Idaho two weeks ago, caught six for 80 yards. . . . In a Big West game at DeKalb, Ill., Mike Maxwell passed for three touchdowns, including the seven-yard game-winner to Mike Senior with 2:09 to play, and Nevada (4-1, 2-0) defeated Northern Illinois, 35-31.
